Status Types and States

Learn about the different status types, incident states, and impact levels used in Status Pages

Status Pages use different status types to communicate the health of your system and individual services. Understanding these statuses is essential for effective incident communication.

Overall System Status Types

Operational

Color: Green (#10b981)
Icon: Check Circle
Description: All systems are functioning normally. No issues detected.

Degraded Performance

Color: Amber (#f59e0b)
Icon: Alert Triangle
Description: Systems are operating but with reduced performance or minor issues. Service is still available but may be slower than usual.

Partial Outage

Color: Orange (#f97316)
Icon: Alert Triangle
Description: Some services or functionality is unavailable. Users may experience errors or degraded experience for certain features.

Major Outage

Color: Red (#ef4444)
Icon: X Circle
Description: Critical system failure. Most or all services are unavailable.

Maintenance

Color: Amber (#f59e0b)
Icon: Alert Triangle
Description: Scheduled maintenance is in progress. Services may be temporarily unavailable or have limited functionality.

Incident

Color: Red (#ef4444)
Icon: X Circle
Description: Active incident requiring attention. Treated as a major outage.

Service Component Status Types

Individual services use the same status types as the overall system:

  • Operational - Service is running normally

  • Degraded - Service is running but with issues

  • Partial Outage - Some features of the service are unavailable

  • Major Outage - Service is completely down

Incident Status States

Incidents have states that indicate their current stage:

Active

Incident is currently being investigated or resolved. Status types:

  • Investigating - Initial investigation is underway

  • Identified - The issue has been identified and a fix is being prepared

  • Monitoring - A fix has been deployed and the team is monitoring for resolution

Resolved

Incident has been fixed and services have been restored.

Incident Impact Levels

Minor

Color: Gray (#6b7280)
Description: Limited impact on users. Affects a small subset of users or has minimal service degradation.

Major

Color: Amber (#f59e0b)
Description: Significant impact on users. Affects many users or causes notable service degradation.

Critical

Color: Red (#ef4444)
Description: Severe impact on users. Most or all users are affected, or service is completely unavailable.

Best Practices

  • Keep status updates clear and concise

  • Update status regularly during incidents (at least every 30 minutes)

  • Always mark incidents as resolved when services are fully restored

  • Use appropriate impact levels to set user expectations

  • Announce scheduled maintenance in advance when possible
